Wastewater Treatment Using Duckweed

The three-year Duckweed project funded by NORAD and involved local authorities of Gutu Rural District Council (RDC), Masvingo RDC and Harare municipality came out with the following conclusions:
• When properly managed duckweed-based pond systems can produce high quality effluent to meet standards as listed in the Zimbabwe Water regulations of 2000.
• Duckweed based systems require a higher degree of maintenance and supervision.
• Dried harvested duckweed can be used as a protein source in chicken and ostrich feeds without risks of disease transmission. There is therefore a potential for cost recovery.
• Local authorities view waste management as an important area although in some cases investment into this area is hampered by inadequate finance.
• A majority of growth points in Zimbabwe use algae based pond systems for wastewater treatment.
• Algae based systems can easily be converted into duckweed based systems without modifications.
• From the findings of the project operational guidelines were developed.
