Streamlining Gender in School Sanitation And Health Policy And Practice

The project was supported by CIDA and its purpose was to put in place a gender sensitive sanitation technology and provide a supportive psychosocial environment in the school system in Zimbabwe. The project was implemented in Silobela and Zhombe communal areas of Kwekwe District.

A major finding was that there exists a tremendous dearth of knowledge on the subjects of sexual maturation, menstruation and menstrual health.

In response to this perceived need, two volumes of a handbook on sexual maturation, menstruation and menstrual health were produced; one for primary school pupils (primary menstrual health) and another for secondary school pupils (secondary menstrual health). A teacher’s guide was also produced. All the materials have been distributed to schools.
