COURSE OVERVIEW
IWSD is offering an Advanced Post-Graduate/ Professional Diploma in Sanitation and Wastewater
Management. The course comes at a time when the country has set high targets on sanitation for
the National Development Strategy 1. The targets are also supported by SGDs targets for WASH.
There is thus a need for deliberate effort to provide a platform for WASH sector personnel to interrogate the current sanitation service and products in the face of urbanization and climate change
effects. This course will set out fundamental modules for Sanitation and Wastewater Management
systems and their differences between contexts, which are humanitarian, developmental, simple
and complex settlements. Moreover, the course will detail climate smart technologies that are
available for communities in different contexts to select from. Modules include Environmental
Chemistry, Public Health, Sanitation Technologies, Basic Mapping for Water and Sanitation Management, Wastewater Treatment, Solid waste, Sewage, Wastewater and Sanitation Infrastructure
Management.
PARTICIPANTS
The course draws participants from the development and humanitarian sectors particularly those
who are into WASH programming, urban and rural planning, environmental and public health from
government institutions, para-government institutions, private sector and civil societies. It is of
extreme relevance for those who are responsible for planning, implementing, managing or regulating sanitation service provision within their organizations, programs or projects.
METHOD OF DELIVERY
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Sanitation and Wastewater Management course is a modular hybrid course involving distance learning, face to face learning and online lessons. The course is
delivered over 10 months shared over two Semesters. In addition to the six in-depth modules, all
participants will participate in a WASH Hackathon exercise where they will collaborate to identify
an existing Sanitation and Wastewater management challenge, design and implement a practical
sanitation system or service provision that will be subjected to scrutiny by a multi sectoral team
of experts.
